Although she was a former slave, Sojourner Truth became an advocate for abolition, women's rights and civil rights. Truth moved to New York City in 1828, where she worked for a minister and by the early 1830, she became a speaker. She declared that the spirit called on her to preach the truth and renamed herself Sojourner Truth. She met with abolitionists such as William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass who encouraged her to give speeches about the horrors of slavery. In 1851, Truth gave her famous speech titles "Ain't I a Woman?"
