Shirley Chisolm advocates for civil rights and education. Also, she dedicated her life to helping others. Chisolm was elected to represent her district in the US House of Representatives. She became the first African American woman to serve on congress and she served seven terms. She was the first African American woman to attempt to gain nomination from a major political party as she ran for Democratic Presidential nomination in 197 but she lost the Democratic nomination to George McGovern.
