Rebecca Lee Crumpler earned her MD from New England Female Medical College in 1864. She was the first African American to earn a degree from the school as well as the first black woman to be a physician in the US. Her main focus was issuing care to women and children especially those from lower income families. In 1883 she published a medical textbook titled "A Book of Medical Discourses in Two Parts." Then, Dr. Crumpler became the first African American doctor to publish a medical textbook.
