Maggie Lena Walker graduated in 1883 with training to be a teacher. After leaving her job teaching, Walker became active in the Independent Order of St. Luke, and organization with the goal of financial and social advancement for black people. She became grand secretary of the organization in 1899 and founded a newspaper for the Independent Order of St. Luke. Also, she opened a bank and a a department store. Walker made the once nearly bankrupt organization profitable.
