After experiencing hair loss, Madam CJ Walker began sell her homemade remedies for hair growth. Walker traveled for a year and a half, going door to door all over the country to sell her products. In 1910, she settled in Indianapolis where she built a factory, hair and manicure salon, and a training school. She began making national headlines in less than a year. She moved to New York in 1916 and became an active part of Harlem, socially and politically. In 1917, she joined a group of Harlem leaders who presented a petition to the White House. She contributed to the creation of the role of the self-made American businesswoman and established herself as a pioneer of black hair care and cosmetics.
