Dr. Jemison got a National Achievement scholarship to Stanford University, and served as the head of the Black Student Union while getting her Bachelor’s degree in science. She was the first African American female to be admitted to NASA’s astronaut training program . In 1992, Jemison and six other astronauts went into space, making her the first African American woman in space. Since her journey to space, Jemison has received countless awards and honorary doctorates. In 2015, Mae Jemison was awarded the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal.
