In 1971 Dr. Canady graduated the University of Michigan and Canady became the first African American Woman to be a neurosurgeon in 1981. During her 20-year career, she saved countless lives, mostly children. Even with her credentials Dr. Canady faced racial discrimination yet, she overcame these hardships and was voted one of the top residents by other physicians. In 1989, she was commemorated for her accomplishments by her home state, Michigan. Now, you can go learn about Dr. Canady at the Women’s Hall of Fame. Also, Children’s hospital of Michigan named her Teacher of the Year. From 1987 to her retirement in 2001 she served as chief of neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital of Michigan
