Cicely Tyson was selective about the roles she played, only taking parts which depicted African Americans positively. She played in Sounder, Roots, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, Oldest Living Confederate Wisdom Tells All, and The Help along with may other films. She is well known for her involvement in her community and co-founded the Dance Theater of Harlem. In 1977, Cicely Tyson was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. In 2010, the NAACP awarded Tyson with the Spingarn Medal, an award for outstanding achievement. Cicely Tyson was awarded with three Emmys and a Tony in addition to other awards.
