Bessie Coleman

Updated: Mar 1, 2021

Bessie Coleman was born in 1892. American aviation schools rejected her due to her race yet she persevered and never gave up of her dream of flying. She learned French in hope to attend a French Aviation School and graduated in 1921 from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. She became the first African American woman to receive a pilot license. Then, she returned to the US but racial discrimination and gender bias prevented her from becoming a commercial pilot so she began stunt flying and performing in air shows. In 1922, Bessie Coleman became the first African American Woman to make a public flight. She did air shows until she died in 1926 from a tragic accident during a rehearsal for an air show.
